Heritage

Sydney was once one of the finest examples in the world of a Victorian city. Unfortunately, our shameful record for destroying our heritage has meant that much of this has been lost.

During the past 20 years I have joined and led many rallies around Sydney to defend our heritage. As Lord Mayor of Sydney, I am committed to strengthening our local heritage controls and working to get the best outcomes where state legislation fails to provide needed protection. I am a strong voice in State Parliament and an advocate for preservation of federal public heritage properties.

The City of Sydney is completing extensive work to put in place effective mechanisms to protect, enhance and interpret our remaining heritage. Our work includes:

Listing specific heritage items, streetscapes and conservation areas in the new City Plan Local Environment Plan (LEP), which provides the strongest legal protection.

General heritage provisions to protect heritage characteristics so that historic terrace houses that are not individually listed will have their distinctive characteristics protected. These City-wide controls will be in a section of the City Plan Development Control Plan (DCP).

Local area controls, to be included in the DCP, but focussing on the distinctive heritage of particular geographic areas, rather than applying to the entire Local Government Area.

Comprehensive inventory sheets and heritage information that will assist in assessing items of heritage importance.

A Heritage Grants Programme providing funds up to $10,000 for projects that improve our heritage, with grants offered on a dollar-for-dollar basis and successful applicants required to meet half of the cost of the project from other sources.
