Doggywood at Fair Day

Victoria Park

Sunday, 21 February 2010

Hello, everyone. Happy Mardi Gras!

I’d like firstly to acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, the traditional custodians of this land.

I’m delighted to see so many dogs and dog-loving owners here today – and as you can see, I’ve brought along my own dog, Banjo.

We’re working to make Sydney a more dog-friendly place, with more off-leash areas in our parks so that our dogs can get a healthy run and play freely.

I’m also working in Parliament to ban animal sales from pet shops that condemn so many animals to a miserable existence, either ill-cared for or else abandoned altogether once the “cute factor” wears off.

A humane society not only looks after its people, but also cares for the companion animals that bring such joy into so many lives.

Doggywood reminds us of the importance of our canine friends and offers all us dog lovers an event to enjoy with each other and with our animals. It’s become one of the great institutions of Fair Day, and it is with great pleasure that I declare it now officially open.

Have a great day to all of you – dogs included!
